Hawaii Senate Democrats name leaders

The Hawaii Senate on Thursday announced its leadership and committee chair assignments for the 2009 session.

Colleen Hanabusa will begin her third term as Senate president in January, with Russell Kokubun as the new vice president. Gary Hooser remains majority leader.

The majority technology leader, a new position, will be David Ige.

Other Senate leaders and chairs are:

• Majority floor leader: Norman Sakamoto

• Majority caucus leader: Shan Tsutsui

• Majority policy leader: Les Ihara, Jr.

• Majority whip: Jill Tokuda

• Majority whip: Suzanne Chun Oakland

• Ways and means chair: Donna Mercado Kim

• Judiciary and government operations chairman: Brian Taniguchi

• Consumer protection chairman: Roz Baker

• Education and housing chairman: Norman Sakamoto

• Higher education chair: Jill Tokuda

• Water, land, agriculture and Hawaiian affairs chairman: Clayton Hee

• Economic development and technology chairwoman: Carol Fukunaga

• Labor chairman: Dwight Takamine

• Health chairman: David Ige

• Human services chairwoman: Suzanne Chun Oakland

There are 23 Democrats and two Republicans in the Senate.
