Fry’s, Safeway workers approve contracts

Grocery workers at Fry’s Food stores and Safeway supermarkets have approved a new labor deal with management.

Fry’s parent company Kroger Co. and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union announced results of grocery employee votes Friday.

The deal resolved disputes regarding health care premiums and pay levels. Fry’s has 13,000 employees in Arizona. Safeway has about 12,000 workers.

A grocery strike against Fry’s and Safeway was averted at the last second in November easy payday loans. The strike would have hit both the workers striking and the chains which are facing the tough economy. Worker votes on the new labor contract were due to UFCW on Dec. 10 and were announced Friday.
