Ascent Solar Technologies Inc., a developer of thin-film photovoltaic modules to generate electricity from the sun, said Monday it is moving from Littleton to a new manufacturing space and headquarters in Thornton.

Ascent (NASDAQ: ASTI) is currently based on Shaffer Parkway in Littleton. The new location, with about 120,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space, is at 12300 Grant St. in Thornton.

Ascent said the building it bought will provide manufacturing space for the first of several manufacturing lines capable of producing panels that can generate 25 megawatts of power per year http://payday-nofax.com. One megawatt is generally enough to support the power needs of about 1,000 homes.

The company plans to expand its production capacity to 100 megawatts worth of solar panels by 2011. The expansion is expected to create about 300 jobs.
